ASK-G.O.A.'L. Forum on Mental Health and Adoption VI: Adoption, Race & White Privilege When: Sunday, February 19, 2012 from 12-2 p.m. Where: Adaptable Human Solutions office (See REVISED directions below) At this forum, therapist Eli Fehler and academic Eleana Kim will give adoptee-focused presentations on how to talk about issues of race and white privilege with family members and friends. Eli Fehler will discuss how to talk about race and privilege with your white friends & families. Eleana Kim will talk about the politics of race in a multicultural and so-called post-racial age, and the ways that adoptees both represent the possibilities and the limitations of such view. After a short break, there will be an open Q & A session. The forum is open -- adoptees and allies are encouraged to attend. Light snacks, drinks and a list of mental health resources will be provided. *This event has a limit of 30 participants, so please RSVP via Facebook as soon as possible. FEATURED SPEAKERS Eli Fehler is a psychotherapist at Adaptable Human Solutions in Seoul. She is a licensed mental health counselor and holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Mars Hill Graduate School. Eleana Kim is a cultural anthropologist who specializes in transnational adoption from south Korea. She received her Ph.D. from NYU and is an assistant professor at the University of Rochester. Her book, "Adopted Territory: Transnational Korean Adoptees and the Politics of Belonging" (Duke University Press), was published in 2010. ************************************************* REVISED DIRECTIONS (slightly different from what was in the original announcement): *If this is your first time to AHS, please give yourself enough time to find the office in case you get lost. Go out Exit 2 until you’re at the street level. At the top of the stairs turn right and follow the sidewalk up the hill past the Lotte City Hotel. As you walk, you will round a corner (continuing to follow the sidewalk) and then turn right into the second driveway, where you will see a guard booth. Walk immediately to your right, and you will see a set of revolving doors. Go through the revolving doors. Sign in at the desk and staff there will send you up the elevator. The venue is on the 9th floor at the Castle Café (on the sign, "Castle" is written in Korean but "Café" is in English). We will also put up a sign with an arrow at the elevators directing people.
